Dougie Abercrombie

The YES movement in North East Fife has lost another dear friend and colleague.

Douglas Abercrombie, or Dougie as we knew him, passed away on Monday Feb 8th, 2021 after a short illness. He died peacefully at home in Cupar surrounded by close family.

Those of us who worked closely with Dougie during the Referendum campaign and beyond will have many heart-warming memories of the “big man”.

He was funny, generous, and reassuringly positive about the future of Scotland. His humour and determination kept us going during the worst of times and no more so than when the weather seemed to conspire with Unionist scare stories to try and drag us down, to silence us. Dougie kept our spirits up.

He was a key member of the campaign group that took the message of hope about a better country across this part of Fife.

Many of you will recall him as a driver of the 4×4 that hauled our famous silver Airstream along every road and into every nook and cranny of this place we call home.

He was also instrumental in helping to set up and run our many fund-raising events. He made serious work fun, the way it should be.

Like his hero, Robert Burns, Dougie was a fine wordsmith and many an hour could pass quickly in his company listening to his stories, thoughts of life, and of course the work of Burns. He was passionate about Scotland’s past as well as our future and had insights into aspects of our history and culture that had been neglected and distorted.

Away from YES, Dougie was well known for his charitable work in the community, and there are many, many folk in Cupar and across North East Fife who will have been touched in a positive way by this most gentle and caring of giants.

We cannot begin to understand the loss being endured by his family, and our thoughts are with them now.

Dougie’s funeral service will take place at Kirkcaldy Crematorium on Tuesday 23 Feb and is subject to restrictions. We are advised that the cortège will leave the family home at Eden Park, Cupar at 11am.

Its painful saying goodbye to such a dear friend and colleague. So, we are not going to.

For he will remain by our side when we again travel down those roads and tracks to every nook and cranny.

To live in the hearts we leave behind, is not to die.

You are with us always, Dougie.
